Irene, quiero agradecerte muy profundamente por todas tus atenciones, tu generosidad y el amor a tu patria que nos contagió a todos de alegría y que nos ayudó a ver a tu increíblemente hermoso país de una manera muy amable y que estoy segura ninguno olvidará. Definitivamente nuestro viaje fue muy positivo y exitoso, pero como lo dije antes, sé que no hubiera sido así sin tu ayuda e interés en hacernos sentir bien en todos los momentos, cada cosa y sitio que visitamos y vimos fue fuera de las expectativas para mi, y supongo que para los estudiantes lo fue mucho más por el desconocimiento que tenían algunos del mundo latinoamericano que estoy segura a partir de esta experiencia tendrán otra forma de verlo.

Irene, I want to sincerely thank you for all your kindness, generosity and love for your country that filled us all with joy and helped us discover your incredibly beautiful country in a very special way that I am sure no one will forget.  Definitely, our trip was a positive and successful one, but as I mentioned it before, I know it would not have been the same without your help and interest in making us all feel good at every moment, everything we did and places we visited and saw were above my expectations, and I am sure that it meant a lot to students, specially to those who knew little about Latin America and after this experience will think differently about it.

Al llegar a Nicaragua no tenía muchas expectativas, hemos aprendido mucho de las clases, y mucho de la cultura compartiendo con las familias.  Orlando y María decían: “si a ustedes les gusta la comida a nosotros también”; a la gente no les importa satisfacer sus necesidades, sino satisfacer a los otros.  Trabajando con los niños, yo pedí una hoja, el chico que tenía solo una hoja, me la dio.  Aprendí de la honestidad entre la gente pobre.

Maxwell Schneider:

Upon my arrival to Nicaragua, I did not have any special expectations. We have learned a lot during the classes, and a lot on Nicaraguan culture sharing with our local families. Orlando and María used to say: “if you like the food we also like it”; people here are more interested in satisfying other people´s needs than their own. Working with the poor kids, I asked for one sheet of paper, and the kid who had only one, gave it to me. I learnt about honesty from the poor people.

Erin O´Bernier:

He aprendido mucho en las últimas dos semanas, el español de Nicaragua gracias a Cecilia, las correcciones del lenguaje por Bayardo, y sobre la cultura por Profesora Noris.  En Carita Feliz aprendí que puedo hablar sin palabras, con abrazos y besos.  En mi primer día recibí mucho afecto, los niños de Carita Feliz me tocaron mi corazón, creo que los niños me enseñaron más de lo que yo les enseñé.  Mi familia fue perfecta para mí.  Fueron maravillosos, observé con ellos la verdadera cultura nicaragüense.  Ahora siento que tengo dos familias.  Gracias Irene por las excursiones y el aprendizaje con la pobreza.

Erin O´Bernier:

I have learnt a lot during the last two weeks, the Nicaraguan Spanish thanks to Cecilia, the language corrections thanks to Bayardo, and about the Culture thanks to Professor Noris.  In “Carita Feliz” I learnt that I can speak with no words, with hugs and kisses.  During  my first day I received a lot of affection, the kids from “Carita Feliz” touched my heart, the kids taught me more than what I taught them.  My family was perfect for me.  They were wonderful, I learnt with them the real Nicaraguan culture.  Now I feel that I have two families.  Thanks Irene for the weekend excursions and my learning on poverty.

Mi español ha mejorado muchísimo, en México y Chile no hablé tanto español como en Nicaragua.  Mi familia ha sido perfecta, han sido huésped profesional, hablan de manera que entiendo, la comida perfecta, y mi hermana Betty es muy sensitiva.  Hemos compartido con música, películas, nuestra casa es una de las más simples y humildes, cuando regrese a Cincinnati voy a apreciar mas lo que tengo porque es mucho. (Lloró por la pobreza). El país me ha dado mucho por su belleza y las personas.  Me siento muy emocionada.

My spanish language has improved a lot, in Mexico and Chile I did not speak as much spanish as I have done it in Nicaragua.  My family has been perfect, they have been a professional guesthouse, they speak in a way that I can understand them, food was perfect, and my sister Betty is very sensitive.  We have shared with music, movies, our home is plain and humble, and upon my return to Cincinnati I will appreciate more what I have because is a lot.  (she cried thinking about poverty…).  Nicaragua has given me a lot due to its beauty and people.  I feel very emotional…

Mi familia ha sido muy buena, me trataron como hija.  Algo parecido con la India por la pobreza, pero también muchas diferencias.  Los fines de semana fueron maravillosos, el país es muy lindo, nunca había visto volcanes, lagunas y un lago tan grande.  Me siento muy cómoda hablando el español, por poder hablar con mayor libertad.  Espero poder visitar Nicaragua nuevamente.

My family has been very nice, they have treated me as a daughter.  The poverty in Nicaragua somehow looks like in India, but there are a lot of differences.  The weekend excursions were wonderful!  The country is very pretty and I have never seen any volcanoes, volcanic lakes or such a huge freshwater lake before! I feel very comfortable speaking Spanish, with so much freedom.  I hope to come back and revisit Nicaragua some day.

Mi familia ha sido excelente, me ayudaron con el español.  El país es muy lindo, hablo más español ahora que antes, gracias a todos incluyendo los profesores.  Me gustan los niños en Carita Feliz, los ancianitos en la casa de hogar La Providencia son muy tristes, pero pienso que ellos son muy simpáticos también.  Quiero regresar.

My family has been excellent!  They helped me to speak and understand Spanish better.  Nicaragua is a very pretty country.  Today I speak more Spanish thanks to everyone including the professors.  I enjoyed the kids at “Carita Feliz”, the seniors at “La Providencia” are very sad, but I think they are very nice too.  I want to come back!
